Mr.Mayor meets the fans
As you can see from the Spenborough Guardian newspaper dated January 15th 1971, that this was a one off reunion that the ex-Zanies organised in conjunction with Councillor Michael Hey for charity purposes. It seems we changed the ZWO to The Grotesque Gnomes for this particular gig! The editorial ran as follows:
Mr.Mayor’s Midnight Musical Marathon – a seven hour festival of jazz which attracted 400 enthusiasts to Spenborough Town Hall in November – raised £110 for the Mayor’s Appeal.
A cheque for £110.18s.3d., the exact financial outcome of the festival which featured International Blues singer Jack Dupree, was officially handed over to the Mayor Mr. Jack Dewhurst when he accepted a lunchtime date at the Royal Hotel, Cleckheaton with some of the musicians and fans on Sunday.
The civic couple – the Mayor was accompanied by the Mayoress – were welcomed by Clr. Michael Hey, the Spenborough councillor who was behind the organising of the function, and the cheque was handed over by Mr. Graham Lockwood, one of the Grotesque Gnomes group, one of the groups which entertained during the concert session which lasted from midnight to 4a.m. on the night of the festival.
Clr. Hey expressed appreciation of all those who had helped in pulling off what he described as “a scoop for Spenborough”.
“Mr. Mayor” himself said he looked upon the occasion not only as one which had raised money for his appeal (Childbirth Research) but one which had given young people the opportunity of showing they were prepared to take in the community life of the borough.
